What Causes Dry Mouth, Chest And Throat Pain While On Amitriptyline?

For the first 3 days, side effects were limited to dry mouth. However, on the 4th and 5th days of taking Amitrityline, 10 mg, in the evening before bedtime, I experiences a significant dry mouth followed by a reaction involving my throat and upper chest on both sides. This reaction was quite severe and involved discomfort and some difficulty in breathing, along with pressure on the inside of my head, and some pain in my left arm. I responded by taking 200 to 400 mg of ibuprofen, which has eliminated some of the discomfort. The discomfort seems to be cyclic, getting worse and better on about a 20 minute cycle. I think this is a negative reaction to the medicine, and have quite taking the medication.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Amitriptyline can cause dry mouth but is it generally less with time. It is important that you keep yourself hydrated and drink frequently. The chest discomfort as long as it is better with ibuprofen is a good sign. If you notice any of these: chest pain in the left side, or shortness of breath or heart racing or irregular rhythm you will need to talk to your doctor. Amitriptylin can affect the heart in some patients and if symptoms with chest pain and heart rhythm issues develop a patient should see his doctor and have an ECG done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
