What Causes Dry Throat While On Treatment For Stomach Cancer?
I found out that I have stomach cancer last Aug I did the treatment and waiting on follow up testing to see if the treatment worked, I had a lot of symptoms but one thing nobody can tell me is my throat stays dry and mucus or saliva builds up in my throat I have to spit in a bottle and it causes me to stay in the house and away from anything dealing with people
It looks like there is a reduction in the watery content of the saliva and it can lead to dry throat and excessive mucous as a side effect of the cancer treatment medicines.
At times if you have undergone chemo and radiotherapy it damages the salivary gland cells leading to reduced secretions causing dry mouth and throat.
For now, chew sugar-free chewing gums.
-Drink plenty of water.
-Avoid regular mouthwash and use a specialized mouthwash that is formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene.
-You can also instil artificial saliva drops.
-Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Honey Arora, Dentist
