What Causes Dull Pain In The Ribs When Diagnosed With A Malrotated Kidney?

I have a malrotated kidney which I discovered years ago. My malrotated kidney functions at 36% and my other kidney at 64%. For the past three to four weeks, I have had a dull pain in my lower right back - below the rib cage and above the buttocks. The pain is persistent, but not severe. It feels like a muscle ache, but never gets better. I also went to a urologist three weeks ago and was treated with Cipro for an infection (I failed to mention to him the malrotated kidney or the discomfort in my back). The only symptom I had was cloudy urine. I have had UTIs before with the usual symptoms of a UTI -- burning, urgency, cloudy urine. This time, I only had the cloudy urine. I have finished the cipro, my urine is clear, but I still have this persistent pain. I am out of town and will be for at least 5 weeks -- therefore I cannot go back to the urologist I recently saw. Do you recommend I search for a local a doctor, and if so should it be a urologist or a nephrologist? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The cause of renal angel pain seems to be related to possible hydronephrosis from underlying urinary tract infection. You need to be rechecked for the current status of the urinary infection with a local doctor (can't wait for 5 weeks till you return home) who may be a family physician and not necessarily uro or nephrologist. Till that time, maintain hydration with plenty of liquids.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
