What Causes Ear Drainage When Suffering From An Ear Infection?
Hi there. My daughter was diagnosed with an ear infection last night and prescribed antibiotics which she is taking. However, she woke up with liquid coming out her ear this morning and this is ongoing throughout the day. Does this mean her ear drum has burst and if so does she need further medical attention, or just continue with antibiotics?
Ear drainage is due to the perforation of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
It does not need further medical attention however she needs to take the prescribed antibiotics for 10-14 days.
The majority of eardrum perforations that occur as a result of ear infection will heal spontaneously.
Perforation allows the drainage of infected fluid, relieving ear pressure and allowing the eardrum to heal more quickly.
Till the ear drainage stops your daughter must avoid swimming, avoid getting water in the affected ear when bathing or showering, a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly may be used in the ear to prevent the entry of water.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
