What Causes Ear Infection?

Hi, I went to the doctors two weeks ago about my ear. They said I had a burst ear drum, also with an ear infection. They prescribed me with Enrythrocin and I m suffering hearing loss in my right ear. Last week I could hear better then my ear popped and wax came out. Now I cannot hear, is this normal in the healing process?

Hi,

The commonest causes of burst ear drum is development of fluid or pus in middle ear, increasing the pressure that ruptures the ear drum. This is usually due to transmission of infection from nasopharynx through Eustachian tube and can be bacterial or viral.
Erythromycin is a drug of choice and continue.
You also have to insist for anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen, decongestant with antihistamine properties.
Nasal decongestant nasal drops.
Suitable and needed ear drops as per the real findings.
Take rest.
Do not blow nose.
Avoid extreme temperature differences.
Drink plenty of warm fluids and have normal diet.
Usually these measures will heal the ear drum and surgery is rarely necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
