What Causes Easy Bruising?

Hi I am a 60 year old female in very good health. In the past 9 months or so if i even scratch my arms or lightly bump them I end up with a very peep purple bruise. It doesn t even in many cases hurt like a normal lighter colored bruise but is very unsightly. Is this merely a sign of thinning skin and age or should I check with my primary care doc?

Hi,

This happens when there is either a low platelet count in blood or our connective tissues are weaker than normal(as in vitamin C deficiency).

If I were your treating doctor, I would have ordered a complete blood count with peripheral smear(to rule out a low count, as well as a rare chance of neoplasm).

If these are normal, I will give a short course of vitamin C supplement. So kindly see your PCP for the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK
