What Causes Eating Disorder Along With Chest Discomfort And Fluttering?

My friend has an eating disorder and is a little worried right now because she says her chest feels strange. she says it feels like it s fluttering or skipping a beat or something along those lines and, when it does, it sometimes makes her feel like she s blacked out for just a very, very short second. just as quick as the flutter itself. last time she had an EKG was about a year ago and they always seem to come back normal but she doesn t feel like that s right. Any ideas on what this might be or what she should do? She s been diagnosed with anorexia purge type. she is not underweight according to the general bmi standards but is much lower than her normal adult weight (20-25lbs lower) and 9lbs under her suggested weight.

Hello,

Your friend has eating disorder and she has been diagnosed with anorexia. She feels like she's skipping a beat. She is experiencing symptoms of anorexia nervosa, chest discomfort (irregular heart rhythms, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, weight loss, etc.). Eating disorder is commonly caused by depression, loneliness, anxiety, low self-esteem, history of sexual abuse or being teased/ ridiculed on size and weight.

Cultural norms that value or glorify people on physical appearance or getting the perfect body are few factors that cause people to develop eating disorder. Your friend is suggested to take food adequately and avoid skipping meals to prevent nutritional deficiencies and to meet the minimum daily requirement of the body. She should be active and mix up well with friends, make new friends.

She should avoid smoking, alcohol or addictions if any. Take adequate sleep. Stay well hydrated. She is suggested to express depression, disgust, shame or guilt to help herself break free from the problems, both psychological and physical. The disorder can result in significant weight loss or failure to gain weight in childhood, as well as nutritional deficiencies that can cause health problems.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
