Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have recently developed edema of both legs and feet I also have a history of UTI and it s hard for that to be diagnosed in me because of my long history and sometimes lack of symptoms I m wondering if the edema can be caused or maybe worse by reoccuring UTIs. My case is complicated by the fact that I am in a wheelchair have been for over 18 years but the edema is a brand new development. Keeping my legs elevated has helped with the lower legs and feet but I continue to have areas of my thighs which are firm and very painful I don t know if I history would help much but I wanted to add I have diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis is there anything you can add that can help me?
You have a history of RA, diabetes & UTI. Presently you have edema of the legs that causes you discomfort. Get physically examined & get CBC, Urinalysis (C/S & R/E) done. You may need to get few Imaging tests done to rule out any kidney stone, kidney disease, etc. Keep your weight under control. Get treated for diabetes & keep your blood sugar under control or it will trigger your symptoms.
Edema of the legs indicate water retention in the body, you may need diuretics. Limit salt intake to avoid water retention. Stay well hydrated, take adequate sleep. Avoid stress. Your treatment will depend upon the severity of the pathology detected.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
