What Causes Edema In The Legs And Ankles With Excessive Abdominal Fat?

I have edema in both legs and ankles and weight gain in stomach area also. I was prescribed Omeprazole 20 mg 2 pills per day and I also take Lisinapril 10 mg for essential high blood pressure. I have had issues with constipation and have been taking ducosate daily. I am thinking that over use of the ducosate may be causing the edema and maybe the Omeprazole also. I also get flushing, weakness, sometimes blurred vision. I have a high hernia which is why I have been prescribed the Omeprazole. I use to take Flodotine over the counter at the beginning of my dx of the high henial hernia with no problem. I had a recent cardiac stress test and everything showed up normal. I had a recent endoscopy and my 4cm hernia has not changed, no cancer, no food allergies. I had a colonoscopy in 2014 with no colon cancer or polyps detected. I also have had issues with globulus feeling in my neck. I do have hypothyroid and I am taking 25mcg of thyroid medication. I am thinking maybe of stopping the Omeprazole and going back to taking the Flodotine and stopping the Ducosate but keep taking the clear lax. The constipation issues started when I quit taking the Thyroid medication and started taking Porcine Thyroid supplement for over a year. The Porcine Thyroid was controlling my Thyroid as when I had my Lab test after I ran out and could not purchase anymore the doctor prescribed me the 25mcg of Thyroid medication based on the results of my lab test.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The current edema status of the legs sounds to be related to stoppage of thyroid medications since 1 year.

There occurs exudation of fluid in the interstitial space due to the action of glycosaminoglycans in the matrix space when thyroid function is not under control.

Kindly get done a fresh thyroid panel with an expert endocrinologist and get back to me as early as possible if you wish further care guidance ahead.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
