What Causes Elderly Person To Fall Down Frequently?
My father is 82 years old. I was just speaking with my mother. She said that he is falling down a lot. I urged her to make a call to his primary care, and I would go to the appointment with them. I am just curious what might cause an elderly person to fall down a lot. He is diabetic and on HBP meds. He also has had prostate cancer. Last time he had a urinary tract infection he fell a lot. Mom says he is being treated for one now.
Hello. I read your query and noted the contents. Elderly patients present very atypically during times of infection. I would suggest you to do a urine routine examination again as he could be having an infection. Secondly, a diabetic patient can have frequent falls as a result of neuropathy (nerve damage). They loose their joint position sense and it can cause falls. They have less sensation on the feet which can cause them to fall down. Finally, an elderly person who is mostly indoors will be low in vitamin D and the link between vitamin d levels and falls are well documented. You should visit your primary care physician. Meanwhile, if you have any more clinical details and/or reports I will be happy to help. Wishing him good health. Take care.Regards, Dr Praveen
