What Causes Elevated AST And ALT Levels In Blood?

My Mother recently had the following lab results; AST (SGOT) of 118 and ALT (SGPT) of 45. She has been an alcoholic for 30+ years and in the last few have been on a variety of prescribed meds. Is the elevated test more likely from alcohol, meds or both? Thanks!!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I can appreciate your concern about your mother...AST and ALT are the enzymes, levels of which are increased in liver dysfunction usually...
As your mother is chronic alcoholic, there is possibility that her liver might start functioning less as before and as a result of this, enzymes are released into blood circulation..
So I would advise you to take your mother to a physician and get abdominal sonography done, which might reveal some abnormality in liver...
Also ask your mother to avoid drinking. So most probably this is due to chronic alcohokism...
