Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 70 year old male in relatively good health except for high blood pressure and seasonal allergies. On May 12 I went to the hospital with pneumonia. I was sent home a day later with no restrictions so after a few days went to the gym, mowed the lawn, layed sod, etc. The following weekend we went away to visit friends and I got bitten by a tick but did not realize it for 5 days. My wife removed the tick. On Friday June 2 my pneumonia symtoms returned and went to the doctor on Monday and was seen by her PA. I was given tetracycline for 21 days that would take care of the pneumonia and the tick and Advair Diskus 250 for 30 days but in reading about the Advair Diskus 250 I have learned that it can cause pneumonia. I am concerned about this and also how active I should be so the pneumonia does not return again.
It is true that Advair can predispose you to pneumonia, one of the medications in Advair is a corticosteroid, which decreases inflammation but can also weaken the immune system. If you have COPD then the benefit is usually greater than the risk; however, I didn't see that you mentioned having COPD, so I'm not sure why Advair was prescribed to you.
Other than this, it is sometimes impossible to avoid pneumonia, since we are constantly breathing in bacteria from the air and bacteria can get into our lungs from our mouth and nose as well. Staying active should help keep your immune system strong, which is the best way of preventing pneumonia. Viruses can predispose you to get pneumonia as well, so if anyone has a cold or the flu around you, try to limit your contact as much as possible.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Aaron Branch,
