What Causes Elevated PSA Levels?

Hello. I m 67. I had a psa test 2 years ago with results just over 0. Yesterday I had new blood work completed and today my doctor called and said my psa was 5.8. He said not to worry about cancer but to see my urologist. Needless to say, I m scared. From 0 to 5.8. Big change. Do you have some thoughts on my situation? Thank you Georgd

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is understandable to be concerned about the increase. The 5.8 is not a very large value and likely does not indicate that there is cancer of the prostate present.

Most persons with cancer have larger values but this is not absolute.

An urologist is a good suggestion, you may need an ultrasound as well as additional blood tests.

I hope this helps
