What Causes Elevated PSA Levels?

Hello I’m a 57 year old male. My PSA has been below 1 for the last 10 years. Eighteen months ago it was 0.87. When I had a blood test a week ago it was 2.3. I am not overweight. However, I’ve had external and internal hameroids as well as fissures for the last 3 months. Can this have anything to do with the rise in PSA? Thank you. K Rizk

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

There's no need to worry, it is within the normal range. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate gland. For men aged between 50 to 59 years, the normal PSA level is 0 to 3.0 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) of blood. PSA level is increased in the following conditions:
1. Benign prostatic enlargement.
2. Infection of the prostate
3. Urinary tract infection
4. Recent tests on your bladder (cystoscopy) or prostate (biopsy)
5. Catheter tube recently placed into your bladder to drain urine
6. Recent intercourse or ejaculation
7. Prostate cancer
Hemorrhoids or anal fissure do not cause an elevated PSA level. As per the given result, your PSA level is within the normal range for your age group. However, if the level keeps rising even after three months, then PSA needs to be measured again and urologist's opinion to be sought.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
