Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Recently had elevated TPO-AB test results (85.28; s/b under 10.10 IU/mL). TSH, T4 free & T3 free all within limits. Could multaq, eliquis & metoprolol cause this high reading? If not, what (besides stress & too much gluten) cause this? Thank you (66-yr-old female).
Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
No, these medications cant cause TPO changes. Thyroid peroxidase is an enzyme normally found in the thyroid gland, plays an important role in the production of thyroid hormones. A TPO test detects antibodies against TPO in the blood and if this is elevated as in your case the certain thyroid issues may be considered, usually an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease or Graves' disease.
In autoimmune disorders, your immune system makes antibodies that mistakenly attack normal tissue. Antibodies that attack the thyroid gland cause inflammation and impaired function of the thyroid. This is treated by antiinflammatory medications and hormonal replacement. But this should be discussed with your endocrinologist.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.
Wishing you good health.
