What Causes Elevated TSH Levels?

Hi Dr Shehzad, My TSH levels from my recent blood report show 11 against 5-6 ranges. Does this mean I have Hypothyroid? My doctor has asked me to take Thyronorm 25mg, However I am a little skeptical of taking medicines. Can my TSH levels be normalised without Thyronorm? I m 33, does this affect my chances of having a baby?

Hi,

Increased TSH level above normal is due to hypothyroidism. Hence, your doctor has prescribed to take thyroid hormone supplement in the form of medication.

It would take about 1 to 3 months for the TSH levels to normalise. Once it happens, you need to take a maintenance dose as advised by your doctor.

Hypothyroidism could affect fertility and might cause difficulty to conceive as it can cause miscarriage. Once the level normalises, fertility would also be normalised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
