Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Elevated Bilirubin Level Along With Fatigue?
My daughter has had high bilirubin counts for the past several years. She is currently extremely tired all day long, sleeping 10 hours and napping 1-2 hours. She is 24 and otherwise healthy, excercises regularly and eats 3 well-balanced meals a day. She has also gained quite a bit of weight within the last 6 months. She is taking medication for anxiety and a monthly injection for birth control. What should be her next step in getting testing for the causes of the high bilirubin and fatigue?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Welcome to HCM.I understand your concern. Incresed bittirubin is due to liver not able to clear the increased billirubin. Your daughter has it over several years..still does nor have marked symptoms of liver disease.... that is typical of Gylburt's syndrome... here is billirubun rise is not sufficient to cause suymptoms of liver disease except for fatigue &raised serum billirubin.... Gilburt's syndrome is a genetic disorder(UGT1A1 gene mutation)...can be diagnosed by increased levrls of unconjugated billirubin in blood. &mostly does not need treatment.... only thing is to diagnose slow destruction of blood cells due to hemolytic anemia (which could be cause of fatigue &needs to be treated.) Any type of stress can induce jaundice in such patients need to avoid stress. Thanks.
