What Causes Elevated Bilirubin Levels?

Hi Doc, I’ve a quick question that is bothering me big time. I had a health check up in August 2017 for visa purposes (all test passed) n the bilirubin Level was higher than normal (just noticed as it shows on the same report). TBIL-56.3, DBIL-15.5 and IBIL- 40.8 umol/L. I don’t drink neither smoke. No other symptoms like fatigue, stomach pain, itching or losing weight or yellow skin or eyes etc is seen or felt. I feel perfectly fine. I’m 32 years south Asian old male 170cm 65kg. I shed off over 15kg in 2012 by training at the gym and i haven’t lost any weight ever since. I’m just trying to figure out if I would need further test on my liver or am i in some sorta danger here?

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hi,

There are many causes of raised bilirubin levels, including hepatitis, CBD obstruction or obstructive jaundice, Crigler-Najjar syndrome, Gilbert syndrome, hemolysis intravascular as well as extravascular.

In your case, a detailed investigation will be required to rule out either possibility.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Peeyush Kumar Saini,
