What Causes Elevated Bilirubin Levels?

I used to consume alcohol till a month back. The bilirubin levels were 1.1 at that time. Sgot and sgpt were elvated at 85 and 55. 2 weeks back my bilirubin levels came down to were 0.6 (total), sgpt and sgot were normal. Yesterday ibilirubin was 1.2. Sgpt and sgot were normal. I have itching and fatigue. platelet count 3.6. lakhs. ESR 25.

Usually when I discontinue alcohol, the readings come within normal levels. But now I see bilirubin rising after coming to normal levels. What does this mean?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can
This is usually sign of certain liver disease and high bilirubin value. Causes vary from non-serious to potentially fatal.
Levels of bilirubin in blood are normally below 1.0 mg/dL (17 µmol/L) and levels over 2-3 mg/dL (34-51 µmol/L) typically results in jaundice.

High bilirubin may be due to liver diseases such as cirrhosis or hepatitis, infections, medications, o rblockage of the bile duct.
Blockage of the bile duct may occur due to gallstones, cancer, or pancreatitis. Medical imaging such as ultrasound is useful for detecting bile duct blockage.

Treatment is typically determined by the underlying cause. If a bile duct blockage is present surgery is typically required, otherwise management is medical.Medical management may involve treating infectious causes and stopping medication that could be contributing. ALcohol should be in every cases avoided permanently.
