Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My fifteen year old son is extremely fatigued. Nearly impossible to wake up in the morning...upon which time he commences to vomit, whether he has eaten or not. This makes it impractical to try to give him any kind of meds that have been prescribed. He has been to a gastroenterologist and had numerous studies and tests, and been prescribed various acid inhibiting meds. He has been to ear nose and throat specialists to see if any of his current problems are tied into this area (as a toddler he was diagnosed with cholesteatoma and underwent numerous surgeries as a result). The ENT did a CT scan and found that one of my son's three semicurcular canals is damaged and has no fluid in it. But the ENT says this would not be the cause of his vomiting issue. I have even taken my son for a sleep study to see if he has apnea or narcolepsy. Nothing came of that either. If left to sleep his "natural cycle" he will sleep up to 14 hours per day. The sleep specialist labeled him with a dx of (sleepiness) and has prescribed nuvigil to help with this daytime fatigue, but this does nothing to help us with the original problem of the morning vomiting. He has had bloodwork that indicates he is not anemic, however his billirubin is elevated. I'm at my end...no one seems to have any answers or is able to offer any information with results. I am broke from visiting specialist and my son has missed several months of school. Please help me!!!
High bilirubin may be due to liver diseases such as cirrhosis or hepatitis, infections, medications, orblockage of the bile duct In the developed world the cause is more often blockage of the bile duct or medications. Blockage of the bile duct may occur due to gallstones, cancer, or pancreatitis. Medical imaging such as ultrasound is useful for detecting bile duct blockage.Treatment of jaundice is typically determined by the underlying cause. If a bile duct blockage is present surgery is typically required, otherwise management is medical. Medical management may involve treating infectious causes and stopping medication that could be contributing. I hope I have answered you query.
