Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am trim active and 73years old. I feel very healthy and enjoy working even though my job is somewhat physical. My problem is when I have my blood pressure taken at the doctors office it spikes very high. My Doctor put me on 10mg 0f Bystolic which really doesn t help. When I take my pressure at home it is usually ok however since I had the high reading at the Doctors office I get myself worked up and it spikes even at home. I take it several times and it usually goes down. I feel fine and don t intend to alter m lifestyle. Your thoughts.
Hello, This may be either due to age related stiffness of blood vessels or white coat hypertension. If your blood pressure remains in between normal range at home, then there is no issue. It might be due to unconscious stress at hospital or in front of doctors (white coat hypertension). Normally blood pressure is measured after 10 minutes of rest and generally 2-3 readings are taken in interval basis to confirm continuous high blood pressure and to start medicines. Otherwise you can try with early morning yoga to relieve stress. Also start low salt food if blood pressure is borderline. that will stable your blood pressure.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Varinder's Response
your bp at hospital is high but normal at home ..it is called white coat hypertension...bp is raised in clinic due to anxiety of some horrible diagnosis by doctor ..i advise my patients to come to my clinic ...relax for 1 or 2 hours and then take bp ..next option is make a chart where patient notes bp along woth time ..i ask my patients to check bp morning noon and night for a week ..and then decide whether patient need medicine or not
