What Causes Elevated Heart Rate After Physical Exertion?

My 12 year old son went for a physical for sports. His blood pressure was normal & so was his O2 level. His heart rate was high at 108, then 112 the doc had him exercise for 2 min and his rate went to 166, then back down to 112 after 2 min of rest. She did not pass him and wants us to come back tomorrow. After I left our appointment, I remembered he drank a bottle of Gatorade a few min before our appt. Could this have caused his heart rate to be abnormal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Heart rate goes up after heavy physical exertion. It is a common physiological reaction and it will return to normal spontaneously.

If you are worried, you can consult a physician and go for serial ECG monitoring to use out possible arrhythmia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
