Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I ve been exercising consistently 6 days a week for a while and gradually have been increasing my running speed on the treadmill once a week. Today I increased my speed to 5.7 mph and did one minute of walking at 3.0 mph and one minute of running at 5.7 mph for 20 minutes. I noticed my BPM reached 211 after about 17 minutes so I got nervous and slowed down. I felt and still feel fine but I was wondering if this is an okay heart rate during strenuous exercise. PS I am 27 years old and my average resting heart rate is around 65-70 bpm.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. I am glad that you are exercising consistently this is very good for your body keep it up. I understand that you are concerned about your heart rate. I will help you understand once you are exercising that is running on a treadmill, muscles of your lower body are working very hard.
Since they are working very hard they will require more blood, in order to supply extra blood heart pumps at a faster rate, so this is a physiological phenomenon and you don't need to worry even if your heart rate is very high. However take note of the following:
1. If your heart rate does not come down to normal even after hours of stopping exercise it means your workout is very hard.
2. If there is pain or tightness in the chest immediately stop exercising and rush to ER.
Hope this was useful. Do let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards, Dr. Akash Kumar
