What Causes Elevated Heart Rate After Switching From Toprol To Lisinopril?
My wife has recently changed from Toprol to lisinopril with good results. Her heart rate is elevated at times to 100 to 107. I just took her pulse by hand and it felt like she skips a beat. Her heart was strong. She has been told earlier in life that she has arythmia. She is 57 years old. Blood pressure was 120/65. Any thoughts?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Toprol contains metoprolol which effects the heart by reducing the heart rate. When we stop drugs in the class of metoprolol (beta blocker) the heart rate might go up for a while and we call that withdrawal from beta blockers. Generally it should improve in 1-2 weeks. If the heart rate stays above 100/min or you feel unwell with it please talk to your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
