What Causes Elevated Heart Rate Upon Weaning Off Atenolol?

My husband was in hospital for a bowel problem/possible surgery. Sent home for a week and told to stop atenolol. Went back in hospital and had surgery. Now heart rate is elevated and they are not sure how to handle this. What is the best way to handle this? He has not been off this medicine for almost 2 weeks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
It is due to 'abrupt withdrawal of Atenolol"
Atenolol is a beta adrenergic blocker used in the treatment of high BP, irregular heart beats, angina pectoris and other heart diseases.
Abrupt withdrawal of long-term beta-blocker like Atenolol can result in an increased heart rate due to increased beta receptor sensitivity. It can also cause increase in blood pressure, palpitations, tremor, sweating, headache and general malaise.
He should be examined by a physician for further evaluation and treatment of increased heart rate as he needs to take Atenolol for his previous health issue.
Hope the suggestion given above would be useful.
