What Causes Elevated Heart Rate While Suffering From Atrial Fibrillation?

Hello, I was diagnosed with Afib by 3 doctors after passing out (almost) 12 times. Six times on beach and 6 in ambulance on way to emergency room. When I collapsed on beach a doctor witnessed what happened and ran over with his iPhone and took my EKG . My heart rate was 208. They latter told me it hit 300. He latter printed it for me. When I arrived at hospital they did numerous test which were all normal. And released me because I was able to tell this story. I ended up seeing a heart specialist. And did numerous test again. All came back normal but he stated I have A fib. Put me on Eliquis which I did not want, but scared my wife with me having a stroke and drooling out the side of my mouth in a wheel chair. I took it. Latter that week I met an acquaintance who is a heart surgeon, who replaces hearts and lungs etc. I related story. He looked at EKG s beach doctor took. He stated, I do not have A fib but A flutter... Also, part of this story is I went in to see doctor 2 weeks before for ear ache that I had for over a year with a severe headache. Took my blood and told me I was diabetic. Sugar was 222 and A1c was 8.9. I was determined to beat this... I started exercising and biking 7 to 8 miles level 10 on stationary bike, lifting weights and did some Matial art exercise. I lost 15 pounds. That day on beach I forgot to drink so I was most likely dehydrated and I was not doing well with all the different medications they were giving me and constantly changing. So the question is. Do I have Afib or Atrial flutter ????? Regards, Dick

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would like to tell you first thing, when you are suffering from atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter then cardiac output decreases and to compensate decreased cardiac output heart rate increases. Without watching your ECG, I cannot say that you are suffering from AFib or atrial flutter.

You should continue with Eliquis because it will prevent clot formation and save you from the danger of stroke.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Navneet Mahajn
