What Causes Elevated Iron Levels In The Blood?

my brother was given iron with each dialysis treatment for a few years. He was admitted to the hospital with ferritin levels off the chart. I was questioned as to family history for hemochromatosis and malignancies. When I told them of the routine charges for iron in dialysis, they turned it over to the nephrologist. One, I am concerned about the significan harm this may have caused and want to know what to ask them to look for as potential complications (the other disciplines have turned care over to the nephrologist); what tests should be requested to rule out long term harm. Two, we are NOT ones looking for litigation, but reading about deaths from iron overload is really, really worrying me. I am his only family and want to do what is best for him.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is likely iron treatment that has caused high ferritin levels. It may (worst case) lead to liver problems, heart failure, and diabetes. The key is to lower iron and filtration levels, it may never give him any problems.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen,
