What Causes Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels While On Leflunomide?

My daughter (15) was switched to Luflunomide from Methotrate. After only a short time her liver enzymes were very high. She has been off both medications for about 8 weeks but the liver numbers are not dropping. Is there anything else that should be done?

Hi,

By your history and description, the possibility of hepatitis (liver damage) is more likely. Better to get done ultrasound examination of the abdomen to identify liver damage. Also, get done full liver function test (LFT).

She should start liver supportive treatment in the form of:
1. Plenty of glucose orally. Plenty of fluids orally.
2. Avoidance of fatty food.
3. Start multivitamin tablets.
4. Start Ursodeoxycholic Acid and Liv 52 syrup.
5. Get done hepatitis markers like HBsAg, HAV, HEV etc to identify infection.

Don't worry, she will be alright with all these.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
