Thanks for contacting with your health concern
1. Mild elevation of liver enzymes are normal [i.e. why she wasn't worried] and
stomach flu doesn't cause the liver enzymes to elevate [although liver produces enzymes in response to injury/infection]
2. For prophylaxis: check the values [if possible] during vacations [since if increasing there could be an ongoing
hepatocellular injury like superadded infection can cause liver dysfunction] since mine concern would be
viral hepatitis A and if the values are increased or you notice loss of appetite, nausea,
vomiting, it could be a case of Hepatitis A.
PS. keep a note that although these tests are sensitive but very nonspecific and serve to detect liver disease rather than quantitative liver function so their high values don't signify a serious complication most of the time, it is the underlying pathophysiological process which needs to be diagnosed and managed.
3. as going for vacations, preventive measures which you can adopt
- maintain personal hygiene and cleanliness.
- boiled water or bottled water.
- strictly no alcohol, painkillers [except paracetamol]
- typhoid and cholera vaccine should be given a week before travel. [if traveling to unhealthy places]
-
immunization against Hepatitis A & B
