[ sometimes superadded infection can cause liver dysfunction] PS. keep a note that although these tests are sensitive but very nonspecific [also high in muscle damage] and serve to detect liver disease rather than quantitative liver function so their high values don t signify a serious complication most of the time, it is the underlying pathophysiological process which needs to be diagnosed and managed, so the interpretation of elevated AST and ALT results will depend upon the entire clinical evaluation. 2. So if they are constantly on the higher side, check with a Hepatologist and/or get a second opinion and go with Ultrasound, Endoscopy, serum albumin, PT [prothrombin time] and INR.
