Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What could the issue be with very high enzyme levels,My brother s level is 1800. Lives in Tallahassee,Fl. Doctoring for 2 months. He has had a biopsy, not enlarged. No cancer.Very weak has lost 20 pounds. Dr. took him off statins. He is on a blood thinner, had open heart 10 years ago.
1. very rarely statins can cause serious fatal complication of muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis which can cause liver damage BUT this side effect is extremely low [found in less than 2% of people taking statins] and liver enzymes returned to normal when statins were stopped, [reason of stopping the same]
2. Adverse reaction of blood thinner is the risk of liver damage so check with blood tests like BT [bleeding time], CT [clotting time], PT [prothrombin time], and INR [international normalized ratio] in consultation with attending physician
PS. keep a note that although these tests are sensitive but very nonspecific [also high in muscle damage] and serve to detect liver disease rather than quantitative liver function so their high values don't signify a serious complication most of the time, it is the underlying pathophysiological process which needs to be diagnosed and managed, so the interpretation of elevated liver enzymes results will depend upon the entire clinical evaluation and if they are constantly on the higher side, check with a Hepatologist and/or get a second opinion.
