What Causes Elevated Periodic Breathing While Using A CPAP Machine?

I currently use a CPAP machine and last night the readings for both AHI and Periodic Breathing suddenly took a jump to 5 and 8% respectively, there was no indication of any leak on the mask. I do suffer a Cardiac problem which at the moment is well managed. Is this something I need to worry about?

Hi,

Periodic breathing means clusters of breaths separated by intervals of apnea (no breathing) or near-apnea. As opposed to normal breathing which is usually regular.

Periodic breathing may be seen in patients with cardiac failure.

It is also seen normal healthy adults also.

Please check it out for cardiac functioning status by echocardiography and ECG.

Elevate the head end of the bed and use oxygen. Please consult your Cardiologist, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
