Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Elevated Potassium Levels And Low Sodium Levels While On Lisinipril?
I have been taking 2.5 mg/day of lisinipril along with 50 mg / day metoprolol. My doctor proposes to increase the lisinipril to 5.0 mg / day to further improve BP levels. In the past, lisinipril has elevated my potassium levels and I have chronic borderline low sodium levels. It is my understanding that higher potassium levels can further lower sodium levels. Could increasing the lisinipril be risky?
* The lisinopril is an inhibitor of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme ( which is responsible for the conversion of Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II ).
* As Angiotensin II is stimulating Aldosterone ( which retains sodium and loss potassium in urine ), the following happens with Lisinopril.
* The serum potassium levels become high and sodium becomes low.
To raise the dose of Lisinopril will be more problematic as per my clinical experience. Should discuss the topic in details with your consultant. I would appreciate your follow up query anytime.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
