Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My dr thought it was gout. My uric acid was high. It started in my big toe then my left ankle then right ankle. It went to my hands. There are 3 fingers now that look deformed. My dr. had me on allopurinol but on the fourth day I woke with pain and itching in my hands that was horrible. Then the pin went into my legs and I could hardly walk. Any ideas? I can t get in to the rheumatologist until March 1.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I agree with your doctor that it may be related to attacks of gout. But you should know that most people with high uric acid levels don't have any symptoms or related problems. Most of the time, a high uric acid level occurs when your kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently. Things that may cause this slow-down in the removal of uric acid include rich foods, being overweight, having diabetes, taking certain diuretics and drinking too much alcohol. So, I suggest to meet your rheumatologist to define better the diagnosis.
I hope my answer helps you.
Regards.
