What Causes Elevation In Blood Sugar Levels Along With Vomiting In An Elderly Person?
My grandmother is a diabetic and has been out of character today. She hasn t eaten much, is very lethargic (verging on non-responsive) and has a blood sugar level of 220. She vomited a small amount earlier and we cannot get her to change or move much at all. What could be happening?! What can we do?!
Nausea and vomiting in an elderly diabetic patient is commonly due to slowing of both stomach and intestinal movement, developing pancreatitis or liver issues. If hyperglycemia goes untreated may complicate to ketoacidoses and trigger nausea and vomiting.
You are suggested to get your grandmother clinically examined by a GP. Get all required tests and investigations done. Give her boiled food, semi solid food like oat meal and porridge. Let her take small meals 4-5 times a day. Her treatment will depend on the pathology detected and her clinical condition.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
