What Causes Elevation In Heart Rate While On Citalopram?

Hi Dr. Andrew.I am 35 yrs old female. I am worried about my health. I was taking citalopram 30 mg tabs daily which was reduced to 20mg and now 10 mg. I am experiencing rapid heart beats since taking them. I experience increased sweating at night and wake up suddenly with my heart racing. What should I do.

Understand your concern.
I think you have side effects of citalopram.
is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) indicated for the treatment of depression

Common side effects of citalopram are as below:
drowsiness, tired, insomnia, mild nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, dry mouth, cold symptoms, increased sweating or urination, weight changes,
decreased sex drive, impotence.

But if below described side effects occur , you should consult doctor immediately:

Very stiff muscles,
high fever,
fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors,
feeling like you might pass out;
agitation, hallucinations, overactive reflexes,
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
loss of coordination,
headache with chest pain and severe dizziness,
fainting, fast or pounding heartbeats
headache, slurred speech, severe weakness, muscle cramps, feeling unsteady, seizure, shallow breathing.

So please consult doctor immedietaly
