Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My brother was told he had end stage of cirrhosis but he doesn t have all the symptoms listed such as swelling of stomach and feet. Does this mean he doesn t have final stage of cirrhosis? He is very thin, has loss of muscle tone, and bruises easily. Mentally, he seems very alert.
There is a scoring system, called the Child-Pugh classification/scoring system that stages persons with liver disease and cirrhosis. It is based on the factors: ascites (fluid in the abdomen), hepatic encephalopathy (liver related mental changes), bleeding times when the blood is checked in the lab, albumin (type of protein) and bilirubin levels. All of these are assessed. His exact diagnosis/stage may need to be discussed with his doctor, if its not clear.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
General & Family Physician
