What Causes Epileptic Attacks?

My husband is 64 and recently been experiencing what he calls a seizure. Sometimes they are mild and sometimes they are severe where his body shakes uncontrollably and he drops to the floor. He seems to loose consciousness for a minute. He is taking anti seizure med and stated taking it Monday but it has not prevented the episodes. He has had a CT scan & waiting to get a MRI. Does it sound like a seizure to you? His eyes are always open but sometimes doesn t remember falling.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, It does look like a seizure. But to prevent further seizure he needs to take anti-seizure medication. He might be taking anti-seizure medications, but always not helpful, if it is not much efficient to control the future seizure episodes it is better you should follow him up with MRI report.

You have stated above that his eyes were open. For that, I would like to know what the CT report resulted. Also, he may not remember the incidence of falling as it was usually told medically as post-ictal confusion.

So, kindly follow up with a neurologist for this concern along with your treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anuradha Das
