What Causes Erythematous Swelling And Irritation In The Lateral Portion Of The Eye?

Hi, I have erythematous swelling and irritation in the lateral portion of my right eye. It is very much localized to the lateral part of the right eye, it has not spread to the medial portion at all. It seems to resemble conjunctivitis, but it is painful when I shut my eye. Any thoughts as to what it might be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for the question.
It'd be helpful though if you could clarify whether the swelling is on your eyelid or the white of your eye.
If it's the eyelid, it's most probably a stye, which is inflammation of the gland of eyelashes.
In such a case, the condition resolves itself in about 5 days.
I would advise hot water fomentation and OTC analgesics for symptomatic relief

Please do get back on whether it's your eyelid or your sclera (white of eye)
Thank you
