Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Escherichia Coli At The Site Of Gallbladder Removal?
12 days post op from laparoscopic gallbladder surgery my father was diagnosed with an abscess. They cultured the abscess inserted a drain tube and sent him home with antibiotics. One week later we were told the culture was E. coli. What are possible causes for E. coli abscess at the site of the gallbladder removal?
The exact site of abscess is not clear from your statement. However, I assume that it is an intra-abdominal abscess. Sometimes during gallbladder removal there is perforation of the organ and small stones can spill in the abdominal cavity. If these stones are not removed, it can cause inflammation and abscess formation. The bacteria you mentioned (E. coli) usually comes from the gut.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Abu Sayeed Mustafa, General & Family Physician
