What Causes Excess Sleep While On Lexapro And Lasix In An Elderly Person?

My husband is 88 years of age, obese, otherwise healthy and takes medication for prostate and urinary health and also small dose of lasex, and lexapro plus bistolic bp med. We have a good routine, eat properly (he won t exercise - given up on trying to get that to happen). He sleeps a great deal during the day and also sleeps at night with some waking time - I know that older people do sleep a lot,and I wonder if this is an indication that his body is shutting down or is this a normal part of aging as we come to end of life? He has good care from several physicians and we are clicking along ok - I am 80 and healthy, active, and his care giver I also get out mid- day most days for bridge games, and lunch with friends -today I m here watching him sleep - hence my note to get your thoughts. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the common concerns associated with the use of above mentioned drugs are:
@ The Lexapro contains Escitalopram which is an anti depressant medicine of SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) group of drug the side effects of which are:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Constipation
- Anorgasm
- Dizziness and lethargy
- Headache
- Insomnia

@ The Lasix is a diuretic causing loss of sodium potassium, chloride, calcium in the urine. Such loss may cause hypokalemia, hyponatremia and other electrolyte disturbances over a period of long time use.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
