What Causes Excessive Belching In A Mentally Disabled Person?
I am caring for a family member x with mental disability, bipolar and perhaps schizophrenia. He has chronic and excessive belching. Is there a link between the belching and mental disorder because another family member has the same problem. I am wondering if this is a genetic problem with links between the two. male X is not compliant with doctors and nearly caused a fatal accident when we tried to take him to the hospital. He is 32 y.o. and otherwise healthy, although thin, drinks coffee and soda. I am wondering whether we should make a concerted effort to get him to a GI specialist. Thanks, Louise

What Causes Excessive Belching In A Mentally Disabled Person?
Hi, Yes, person with depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia may have chronic excessive belching. Genetics does not seem to play a role here. You should consult some psychiatrist for the treatment first and if it does not work, then you can consult a gastroenterologist. Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
