i went to the gp today because i had a rather excessive bleed during sex. He examined me and said there was a lot of mucus and the cervix is inflammed, he noticed it felt grainy (i don't know what that means). I have not had a pap smear for about 4 years, but I have ct scans and ultra sounds in the past 12 months, would they have shown anything worrying? The internet keeps leading me to cervical cancer based on the symptoms - what do you think?
i have seen quite a few women with similar problem often it is just cervical eversion ("grainy cervix"), the inner parts of the cervix kind of everted and can easily bleed from sexual contact. I would prescribe some antibiotics and schedule a pap smear soon after, preferably the Liquid Based cytology. Doing the normal smear on glass slide may not be a good idea as the vervix often bleed in the process. CT Scans and ultrasounds are more for identifying lumps in the womb/uterus and ovaries, not for detection of cervical cell abnormality. Hope this helps to allay your apprehension.
