What Causes Excessive Menstrual Bleeding After Forgetting To Remove Tampon?

Hi, last week my period was very heavy it lasted for 5 days. 3 days was normal bleeding and for 2 days I had to change tampon and sanitary towel every hour (I used both of them at the same time). 2-3 days after period I noticed that a tampon had got lost and was still inside me. It had actually turned the other way around. Soon after removing the tampon I started bleeding again (it has lasted for a day now) . I also have a slight smelly discharge. What should I do? My periods have always been regular and lasted for 5 days. I am 39 years old.

Hi,

Excessive bleeding is less likely to be caused by forgotten tampon. This suggest menorrhagia which we should evaluate to find out the cause. Presence of foul smelling discharge after forgotten tampon might suggest secondary infection there which need antibiotic therapy. So kindly discuss with your gynecologist, who can treat the infection as well as evaluate menorrhagia.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
