What Causes Excessive Mucus Production In Mouth?

I have been having problems with excess mucus in what feels like the area just behind the soft palate also the soft palate is very irritated.

There is enough mucus production that it is causing me to gag and then vomit, this goes on for some time.

It happens sporadically, today I noticed that it might be caused by contaminants in the air such as smoke.

I have been to see a doctor and he prescribed amoxicillian and Methylepredizolone. The Steroids worked wonderfully, however I had a bad reaction to them and had to quit taking them the next day. I asked a pharmacist about this and they suggested Sudafed and Ibuprofen as an acceptable substitute. I have NOT had the same level of relief using these. I am still taking the amoxicillian (now 8 days later).

When I first went to the doctor it was because this mucus issue had been popping up about once a week for a couple days every week for several weeks. I had a bad episode and started gagging and vomiting at work and I had enough. I think he was correct about there being an infection as I hadn't been feeling good and it had gotten bad enough for me to go see a doctor.

Today was the fist morning I have woken up and felt good so I tried going into work... I immediately noticed that cigarette smoke irritated the area behind the soft palate/backside of the soft palate. but after about 10 minutes away from the smoke I would start feeling better. Then someone fired up a dirt bike around lunch (work in a mechanic shop) and the smoke from it sent me into the gagging vomiting fit I went to the doctor for in the first place!

So while I do believe I did need the antibiotics, I feel there is a separate problem occurring and have scheduled another appointment for Monday morning (3 days from now). In the mean time I would like to get some idea of what all this might be because I am becoming desperate!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

The feeling of excessive mucous production can be either due to increased production or decreased clearance..
As per your complain excessive mucous production and feeling of irritation behind the soft palate can be due to either allergic reaction to the smoke as you pointed that you get the feeling of irritation every time you are exposed to smoke while one other reason for this can be SILENT REFLUX [LARYNGEO-PHARYNGEAL REFLUX] which can lead to throat irritation and due to which there is increased mucous production and any irritant when enters the throat like smoke can add up to the irritation..

You should consult an ENT specialist and get evaluated and in case of reflux you can also be referred to a Gastroenterologist who can evaluate the entire signs and symptoms and also get an Endoscopy done to rule out the exact cause..

You can also try taking Pantoprazole 40 mg twice a day and take digene or gelucil half an hour before meals for relief..
Do warm saline gargles..
Avoid spicy foods as it can cause irritation..

Hope this information helps..
