My 91+ year old mother has episodes of shoulder/arm pain in conjunction with excessive mouth watering/salivating. She also feels out of breath often during the day. A recent visit to our family doctor for a physical revealed normal blood tests , etc. What is causing these episodes?

Welcome to hcm, muscles of mastication and tongue muscles weaknesses in elderly causes drooling of saliva Elderly people experience such problems. Once secreated it can be swallowing also but all these muscles become weak due to aging Some of them get aspirated also so must be careful. Asking them to keep head tilted to one side while sleeping to prevent aspiration. Hope this explains
