What Causes Excessive Salivation?

My Father is 86 years old and has had trouble with spitting up/regurgitation during or following eating. Sometimes it seems related to eating and talking just after swallowing and sometimes it seems related to the type of food (lettuce, fiberous, rice, etc.) Several years ago he had an arthroscopic procedure done on his esophagus (not sure of the name of the procedure) but he didn t think it really worked. What can you tell me about his condition and recommendations for medical treatment. He is resisting the notion of seeing a Dr about this.

Hello,

As per your complain excessive saliva production or hyper salivation can be felt in 2 cases:

1. Due to increased production.
2. Due to reduced swallowing.

Saliva overproduction can occur due to a number of common causes like oral and throat infections, oral ulcers, acid reflux, excess starch consumption, side effect of medication like Clonazepam, pilocarpine, Ketamine etc, toxin exposure, etc

Decreased swallowing can occur due to throat pain caused by infection, tonsillitis, nerve damage etc. So for ruling out the exact cause you should be clinically examined and also an X-ray of salivary glands can be done along with Sialography and other tests as per suspected cause to solve the problem. As of now you can frequently use mouthwash and brushing teeth as it has a drying effect in mouth.

Hope I have answered your query.
