Dear,
Thanks for contacting HCM
I have read your concern about your daughter and with what you have mentioned i want to convey to you that i think your daughter has a condition called as
Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is characterized by periods of extreme
daytime sleepiness and sudden, irresistible bouts of sleep that can happen at any time. These “sleep attacks” usually last a few seconds to several minutes. The other symptom your daughter may have is sudden loss of voluntary
muscle tone which doesn't allows the patient to move.
Narcolepsy can greatly affect daily activities and makes it difficult for patient to live a normal life. The most common cause is loss of a substance called Hypocretin (it keeps you awake) in the brain which is generally due to attack by ones own immune system (called autoimmunity). There can be other factors too like infections, exposure to toxins, dietary factors, stress,
hormonal changes such as those occurring during puberty or
menopause.
Two test would help to confirm the diagnosis
1- polysomnogram (PSG)
2- Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
PSG is performed overnight and it studies sleep pattern of patient when he is sleeping while MSLT is performed during the day to measure a person's tendency to fall asleep.
I must inform you Narcolepsy cannot be treated but symptoms can be controlled with the help of medications such as
modafinil, Tricyclic antidepressants, Serotonin and Noradrenegic reuptake inhibitors, amphetamine-like stimulants such as
methylphenidate and sodium oxybate or gamma hydroxybutyrate but all these drugs are prescription drugs and your daughter need to see a sleep specialist to have proper evaluation, treatment and follow up.
I hope this helped
Regards
