I am a 65 year old female who has been experiencing very heavy sleeping patterns for about a year. I use a CPAP for sleep apnea. My latest sleep study was normal (done while experiencing these symptoms). I also have obstructive hydrocephalus treated with a magnetic VP shunt with an anti-siphon device. Diagnosed in 2002, (6 surgeries) Seattle, WA with subsequent shunt revision in 2005 Orlando, FL. I currently live in the nearby Asheville NC area. My shunt is functioning (verified by head x-ray). Head CT was done; results as yet not communicated to me. I am bipolar using Lithium, Celexa and Wellbutrin to manage depression. I was diagnosed 38 years ago and compliant with occasional therapy as needed--I recognize the need to get psychological treatment. I have a history of sleeping in excess up to 17 hours at a time. I am hard of hearing, high frequency tones, and started using my cell phone with alternate tones as an alarm clock. My response to the alarm is that I acknowledge the alarm, but am unable to move to shut it off. I have tried setting the cell phone across the room, but my brain ignores it and I drift back to sleep. I have noted that my brain is awake with thoughts running through my head, but I am unable to move. It takes my husband 3 times or more to wake me up in the morning. When I wake up I feel like I have been drugged with a mickey and I stagger down the hall. I am seeking help, but so far no answers.
