Medications used to treat cold and cough contain antihistaminics like Chloropheramine, Diphenhydramine, Codeine, Cetrizine. These block either the action of histamine which causes cold and thus cure sneezing, coughing. At the same time these cross the blood brain barrier and d effect the activity of histamine which leads to drowsiness.
Codeine however binds to opioid receptors which causes drowsiness. These chemicals in medicines are responsible for drowsiness of your kid and you need not to worry.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Soheel Hussain Zargar,
